Best Fantasy Webtoons on Naver

****Warning****

When I see a Webtoon with art or a theme I like, I just dive right in.
There are some mild spoilers below in the synopses you can skip if you plan on reading the Webtoon.

The Remarried Empress (재혼 황후)

by Alphatart/Sumpul

A romance fantasy Webtoon based on the web novel, “The Remarried Empress”. Some web novel fans were dissatisfied with its drawings initially. But the Webtoon version looks alluring to me, maybe because I didn’t read the novel. The Webtoon starts with a Cider (사이다 | gratifying) scene, and goes back in time to show lots of Goguma (고구마 | frustrating) scenes.

Korean fans nicknamed Sovieshu (소비에슈) as Gaevieshu (개비에슈, meaning dog-vieshu), Noebieotshu (뇌비었슈, meaning brain is empty), etc. They also call Rashta (라스타) a Lobster (랍스타) as a brainless marine life and a Korean pun. It’s ecstatic to see Heinrey (하인리) and Navier (나비에) on the other hand.

Synopsis

Navier devoted her entire life to becoming the perfect empress. Three years after being crowned, her husband, Sovieshu, falls in love with Rashta, a runaway slave, and brings her to the palace, making her his concubine.

Sovieshu repeatedly hurts Navier’s feeling, while Rashta begs Sovieshu to make her an empress. When Navier finds out that Sovieshu has decided to get a divorce, she realizes her efforts have come to nothing. She then decides to remarry.

Score

9

The Remarried Empress is well-drawn and well-written.
If you like romance and can stand reading about unscrupulous people, this Webtoon is worth a look!

Omniscient Reader (전지적 독자 시점)

by sing N song/UMI

Omniscient Reader is also a web novel-based Webtoon. Since the web novel was legendary with a huge fan base, there were many concerns about the illustrations. However, the Webtoon has been receiving highly favorable reviews.

The original story contains quite a lot of cruel narratives. As Omniscient Reader is not rated R, it minimizes violent depictions without altering the original content too much.

Synopsis

Dokja (독자 | Reader) is an ordinary office worker and is the only reader of a web novel, “Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse”. He finishes reading this novel with 3000+ episodes after ten years. One day, this apocalyptic novel turns into reality and he’s the only one who knows how the world is going to end and how to survive.

Score

10

Omniscient Reader is perfect for fantasy/action lovers.
From its illustrations to characters and stories, this Webtoon is perfect so far!

Your Throne (하루만 네가 되고 싶어 | I want to be you, just for a day)

by SAM

Your Throne is a romance fantasy Webtoon. I immediately immersed myself in this Webtoon since it offers gorgeous drawings with vivid colors and awesome characters. At first, I thought it might be a typical romance Webtoon, but its narratives break all existing clichés of the romance fantasy genre.

Instead of focusing on four-sided romantic relationships, the progressive protagonists confront the villain who deceives and uses them.

Synopsis

Medea (메데이아) is smart, strong and beautiful. She loses her place of crown princess to Psyche (프시케), who’s pure, kind, naive, blessed by the guardian deity, and admires Medea.

The two heroines come to know each other’s tragic past and then join forces to defeat the real enemy, Eros (이아로스), who’s the sociopath crown prince, with the help of Helio (헬리오), who sincerely respects and loves Medea.

One day, Medea wishes to live Psyche’s life and her wish is granted by the guardian deity. The catch is that they can only change their bodies when beloved Psyche faces imminent danger.

Score

10

Your Throne is perfect for fantasy/romance/action lovers!
It’s not a typical love story, and it’s rewarding to see characters grow as the story progresses.

Tower of God (신의 탑)

by SIU

Tower of God is a popular Webtoon, created by SIU. Since 2010, it’s been one of the top webtoons on Naver. There’s even an animated version on Crunchyroll produced by the joint effort of Korea, the U.S., and Japan.

There are so many backstabbers throughout the story. The set value is “compete for what you want to have”, and betrayal happens through the scheme of several groups. Some Korean fans call the Webtoon, “Tower of Betrayal”.

Synopsis

Tower of God is about Twenty-Fifth Bam (스물다섯번째 밤), a boy who starts climbing a mythical tower to find a girl, Rachel (라헬) who means everything to him.

The story proceeds with the protagonist group taking a test to climb up the tower floor by floor. Each test has a rule and strategy is a centerpiece to winning battles. It has a lot of gaming elements as well, so expect a video game adaptation in the future.

Double Spoiler Alert! Rachel has a huge inferiority complex and became the symbol of betrayal in Korea. Many fans started mentioning, “it’s all because of Rachel”, “a bi**h like Rachel”, “Rachel-level evil”, etc. for evil female characters on other Webtoons. So, she became one of the four evil women (4대 악녀) on Naver Webtoon.

Score

10

Tower of God is consistent and creative.
It’s fun to read both the Webtoon and watch the animated version!

Mystical (신비)

by VAN.J

A relatively new Webtoon by VAN.J, who successfully completed her previous Webtoon, “Winter Woods (윈터우즈)”. Her illustrations are so beautiful and heartwarming, sometimes with a cute, whimsical and comical expression.

This Webtoon is about the love story of an unknown creature awakening from her long sleep, “Myst (신비)”, and “Garam (가람)” who falls in love with her. They’re such an adorable couple!

Synopsis

Garam loves to draw, but he delays his dream of being an artist. One day, he moves into his grandma’s empty house by the ocean in the middle of nowhere. There, Garam meets a mystical water creature released from an orb. She has no memories at all like a blank slate. Garam helps her survive and asks her to be his muse for his drawings.

Score

9

The story is great so far, and it’s totally worth reading for its beautiful illustrations!

Kubera (쿠베라)

by Currygom

Kubera is a unique fantasy Webtoon starring a girl, who has the name of a God, and magicians. The world of Kubera Webtoon includes Gods, Suras (수라), magicians and pure-bloods (순혈).

At first, it feels light and fun, but becomes very complex as the story evolves. It’s difficult to summarize the plot because there are so many characters and the story progresses from various perspectives. This Webtoon has about 10 main characters. The Webtoonist referred to it as fantasy romance several times, but it’s more like fantasy than romance.

Synopsis

Kubera Leez (쿠베라) goes deep into the forest to pick some mushrooms to eat on her 16th birthday. She meets Gandharva by accident and has to make a detour because of his threats. On the way back home, she sees her entire village turning to dust by Maruna. She almost gets killed by Maruna, but Asha (아샤), a mysterious magician, shows up to save her.

Score

8

This Webtoon makes me wish for the happiness of the main characters in depressing situations.
It takes some time to get addicted to Kubera, but it pays off.

Ghost Teller (귀전구담)

by QTT

Ghost Teller is an expressive Webtoon with doe-eyed characters and a creative concept. It’s completed in Korean, but ongoing in English.

Even though it lies in the horror genre, it feels more like fantasy to me. Ghost Teller is a story about people who are more terrifying than ghosts, shared by ghosts suffering from “post-life stress syndrome”.

Synopsis

A group of (very pretty) ghosts gathers to take turns and each tell a scary story. These are “human stories” instead of “ghost stories”, which are a lot scarier. Each story unveils how they ended up being a ghost, describing the ugly side of people.

Score

9

I’m not a fan of horror, but this is definitely worth checking out!
