Best Action Webtoons on Naver

****Warning****

When I see a Webtoon with art or a theme I like, I just dive right in.
There are some mild spoilers below in the synopsis sections you can skip if you plan on reading a Webtoon.

Unholy Blood (화이트 블러드 | White Blood)

by Lina Im

As soon as Unholy Blood was serialized, it gained tremendous popularity and became one of the top ranked Webtoons on Thursday (Koreans love ranking things). The outstanding paintings of Lina Im are a joy to look at. I love its urban fantasy setting where vampires hide in the crowd, and the powerful protagonist.

Synopsis

The story revolves around “Hayan”, a rare purebred vampire who has been trying to lead a normal life. She even refuses to drink human blood, and eats ox blood pudding (seonji) instead.

When her dream of a ordinary life is crushed by a group of criminal vampires, she seeks revenge by collaborating with a local policeman. She also tries to regain her lost childhood memories on the way.

Score

9

I love this Webtoon. It has beautiful illustrations and a solid storyline!

The Boxer (더 복서)

by JH

As a kid, I enjoyed reading Hajime no Ippo (더 파이팅 | The Fighting in Korean). The Boxer is thankfully different from the Japanese Manga, but if you’re a fan of boxing, you’ll still enjoy this relatively new Webtoon. It’s not that predictable and you’re never sure who the good guy is.

Synopsis

It starts with the legendary trainer “K” who discovers a strange boy, named “Yu” while looking for a talented boxer. It’s uncertain if his shocking talent is a blessing or a curse, because his eyes look really empty.

The story unfolds like an anthology of short episodes centering on different characters who fight Yu. The main character seems almost like a villain since he often crushes everybody’s dream, but he’s still likable. It has some elements that are similar to One Punch Man, but with a more serious tone.

Score

10

The Boxer is awesome. You can still find subtle comedy elements in this serious looking Webtoon.

The God of High School (갓 오브 하이스쿨)

by Yongje Park

The God of High School is binge-worthy! I took a break when the character balance collapsed (밸붕) around 2018. This happened when the game version was launched (it felt like the Webtoonist was stretching the storyline). The reviews have gone back up shortly after, so I might try reading it again.

Synopsis

A martial arts tournament, “The God of High School (G.O.H)”, takes place to select the strongest among high school students around the world. The winner will be granted anything they wish for (this is possible with super powers – 차력). Mori Jin, a high school student who is a master of Taekwondo, participates in this tournament with his friends.

The atmosphere is overall light and a bit childish. G.O.H focuses on actions that readers can enjoy, rather than a serious story. The scale gets larger as the story progresses from the high school tournament to the final Ragnarok.

Score

7

G.O.H is binge-worthy. Except for story and character-related disappointments in some episodes, it’s pretty good.

Eleceed (일렉시드)

by Jeho Son/ZHENA

Eleceed is a Webtoon created by a collaboration with Jeho Son, famous for Noblesse, and ZHENA, known for Girls of the Wild’s. At first, many fans were worried because when Eleceed was first serialized, the finale of Noblesse by Jeho Son was receiving horrible reviews (the creator might have moved on mentally to his new project). But, so far, the story looks good, and fans, including me, love adorable cats.

Synopsis

Superhumans exist in the world of Eleceed (Electricity + Speed), and the story includes the typical battles you’d expect. However, it focuses more on the relationship between a modest protagonist and a cat. Jiwoo is a warm-hearted high school student who has been hiding his ability as an awakened one (각성자). Kayden is one of the strongest in the world, who accidentally enters the body of a fat cat on the run.

Even though there are a million superhero comics, movies and TV shows now, this Webtoon is like nothing you’ve seen, because it has a CAT!!

Score

8

The scale of fights seem not that grand yet, but it still makes you smile while reading it.

Weak Hero (약한영웅)

by SEOPASS/RAZEN

Weak Hero takes place in a high school setting in Korea. The genre itself is about bullies, but it rarely beautifies them (this is a concern with many bully-related Webtoons).

Synopsis

The protagonist, “Sieun Yeon”, is a good student who devotes himself to studying (but has to fight bullies to protect himself and avenge his best friend who died from being bullied). His crew fights the “trashy” bullies. Except for the excessive violence, this Webtoon receives favorable reviews.

Sieun Yeon is naturally weak, so his fighting style is calculative and brutal, using his brain, tools and mind games. His other name is “Gray (White Snake of Eunjang High School | 은장백사)”.

Score

9

Weak Hero is brutal and merciless, but its high school world happening around Yeongdeungpo, Seoul is set up well.

1 Second (1초)

by Sini/GwangUn

1 Second is Webtoon about a legendary firefighter with a 100% rescue rate. It’s incredibly realistic since Sini, the story writer, completed his military service as a public servant at a fire station. Sini even interviewed firefighters to get the details right. He also wrote about firefighters in his previous Webtoon, “About Death (by Sini/Hyeono)”.

Firefighters don’t get the benefits or regard they do in other countries. For example, most people don’t consider them superheros like in the U.S.A. Fortunately, many readers have started supporting them because of this Webtoon.

Synopsis

His special ability is the foresight to see the future when he is tense. Despite the minor fantasy elements, 1 Second unveils the real stories of firefighters racing against time to save people.

Score

10

This well-made Webtoon brings a lot of realism with some fantasy elements!

Get Back (겟백)

by Seyoon

Get Back is very dark and hopeless, but it’s totally worth reading for its solid storyline and character development.

Synopsis

Get Back starts in an orphanage called, Damrokwon (담록원). At this dark and mysterious orphanage, the kids have nametags with a number from 1 to 6 on them. The number shows their talent level (level 1 being the highest). Natural talent is given only to the top 1%, talent becomes power, and talent is unfair.

The main characters are Dajeong with level 1 talent, and her older sister Eunjeong with level 6 who is jealous of her genius sister. Their fate changed seven years ago and they’re struggling to survive.

Score

8

Although the Webtoonist said the disheartening level was toned down, it’s still super dark and depressing. You’ll probably want to give the characters a hug after reading it.
